There is probably some kernel of truth to all of them. But the fact remains; there is no original, single, totally accurate database of serial numbers from 1866 forward that we are aware of. But perhaps these pages can help you somewhat in your research.
The Model 84 was the first shotgun designed and manufactured by the H. W. Cooey Machine & Arms Company in Cobourg, Ontario, Canada. Model 84's manufactured before 1961 are stamped "H. W. Cooey Machine & Arms Company" on the right side of the action, while guns made after the Winchester's acquisition of Cooey are stamped "Winchester-Western (Canada) Limited." on the right side of the receiver. Written records of serial numbers are not generally available. Some have suggested that Cooey did not use serial numbers, but many pre-1961 Model 84s are stamped with serial numbers on the receiver, barrel (under the fore stock) and under the butt plate/shoulder stock. Dating the serial numbers remains a challenge for collectors of Cooey firearms.
The Cooey 84 is a shotgun manufactured by the H. W. Cooey Machine & Arms Company in Cobourg, Ontario, Canada (later acquired by the Winchester Arms Company). The shotgun was sold as model number 84 until 1967, and (following acquisition by Winchester) as model number 840. The gun ceased to be produced in 1979. Today, the 84/840 is considered a collector's item to certain people who collect the Canadian-made firearms.

I had a model 842 for a while, think the 84x series were made after 1960 - can confirm that by the address on the barrel being Westfield, MA rather than Chicopee Falls, MA. Since the serial number on yours doesn't start with a letter, it should predate 1969. Look around for an oval stamp with 1 or 2 numbers followed by a letter. The letter will determine the year.
Well, the checkering style on your rifle was introduced in 1965, and the serial numbers went to having a letter prefix in 1969 - so your rifle will date to 1965-1968. I don't know anybody that has serial number ranges for 840's by year, but if you look the barrel over closely you should find an oval stamp with 1 or 2 numbers followed by a letter. The letter will give you the year.S == 1965T == 1966U == 1967V == 1968 2ff7e9595c
